1. What are the goals of this internship program?
This program is aimed at encouraging young Canadians to more actively participate
in public policy development, public service, government and political life.
It provides young people with hands-on work experience and an opportunity
to improve their understanding of how intergovernmental relations operate
in the Canadian federation.
2. Who is eligible to participate?
Eligible participants must meet all of the following requirements. They must:
• be 25 years of age or under as of the application deadline.
• have completed an undergraduate or graduate degree from a recognized university.
• be legally able to work in Canada.
In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate an interest in Canadian politics and federalism, and be able to communicate in French and English.
3. Can this program be used as part of my placement requirement for
my academic degree?
No, this program is intended for individuals who have completed their studies.
4. Who is sponsoring this internship?
This internship is sponsored by the Council of the Federation, an organization
comprising the Premiers of Canada’s 13 provinces and territories.
5. How long is this internship?
The duration of the internship is 12 months, starting in July.
6. How much does the internship pay?
The salary for the 12-month internship is $40,000.
7. How many intern positions are available?
The Council of the Federation Secretariat hires one intern each year.
8. What are the job responsibilities of the intern?
The intern is involved in many aspects of the work of the Council of the Federation Secretariat, including:
• monitoring the COF website to ensure information is up to date and accurate;
• drafting briefing notes and other materials;
• working on special projects;
• contributing to the planning and smooth-functioning of Council meetings and events;
• traveling on occasion throughout the country; and
• undertaking general office duties, as required.
9. Where does the intern work?
The intern will work in Ottawa in the offices of the Council of the Federation
Secretariat.
10. Will my moving expenses be paid?
The successful candidate will have their relocation expenses paid to a maximum
of $3,000.
